DR. SHELBY KRYWONOS

Veterinarian

Education: 2023 Graduate – Western College of Veterinary Medicine, SK
Birthplace: Vernon, BC

What are your career goals?

I am committed to delivering the highest standard of care and minimizing stress for my patients. I am eager to continually expand my knowledge across all areas of veterinary medicine, with a particular focus on surgery and diagnostic imaging. Additionally, I am passionate about engaging in outreach work. Contributing to animal welfare and, by extension, supporting my community is very fulfilling.

What’s the most inspiring part of your job?

I feel most inspired when I can help an animal in need and in turn relieve their owner’s worry. I love animals and I also love making a difference in people’s lives. Renewing the animal-human bond is very important to me.

What was your childhood dream job/career?

Since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. I grew up on a hobby farm surrounded by animals. Learning animal anatomy, physiology, and how to treat their ailments was the next best way to show them my love!

If you were an animal what would you be and why?

If I were an animal, I would choose to be a bird. The idea of soaring through the sky with effortless grace and freedom sounds like an incredible way to experience life.

What is your background and experience?

I was born and raised in Vernon and I love every bit of the Okanagan. I worked at several small and mixed animal practices before and during vet school. During vet school I gained as much experience as I could in companion animal care. After graduating, I completed a rotating internship at an equine referral center on the coast. I was trained in intense emergency care, anesthesia, surgery, and ambulatory work. It has always been my dream to return to the Okanagan and practice as a veterinarian for my community and I am thrilled to fulfill that dream in part with Silver Star Animal Care.

Where would we find you (when not working) on a sunny Okanagan day?

Riding my horse Georgio on a trail in the mountains near my house or going on a hike with my family.

What advice would you give a candidate who wants to join our team of superstars?

Communication is a very important aspect of veterinary medicine. Being able to effectively communicate to your team members improves efficiency and patient care.
